Meta Ad Library for Algerian sellers: how to research products and competitors, and what it cannot tell you
A step-by-step method to use the free Meta Ad Library for product and competitor research, what Meta says it shows and hides for ordinary ads, and how to check a lead with real numbers.
Most product research tutorials tell you to find “winning products” by copying whatever many people are advertising. The Meta Ad Library can help you with that, but only if you know what it shows and what it hides. This article uses Meta’s own help page and its Transparency Center page for the Library tools, both read on 29 October 2026. We kept to what Meta writes, and label our own method as ours.
What the Ad Library is
Meta describes it as a public, searchable hub for ad transparency. It contains all active ads shown across Meta technologies, and the active public branded content (posts with the paid partnership label) on Facebook and Instagram. Anyone can view and search it: you can type any term, a business name or a Page name, and you get ads that contain the term or that come from Pages with the term in their name.
What it shows for a normal shop ad
For ordinary ads that are not political and do not deliver in the EU, Meta’s table says the Library shows:
- the ad creative (image or video and text);
- the Page the ad ran from;
- the date it started to run;
- Page Transparency details: connected accounts, Page history, who manages the Page and the main countries where it is managed. When you open a Page you can also see when it was created and its past names.
Click See ad details for more, for example the About section or the lead form of a lead-generation ad. A country selector lets you look at ads shown in a specific country.
What it does not show (this is the important part)
For those same ordinary ads, Meta states that the Library does not show:
- the amount spent;
- impressions or reach;
- the audience size or the targeting chosen;
- an archive once the ad stops running.
Spend, reach, targeting and an archive exist for ads about social issues, elections or politics, and (with different fields) for ads delivered to the EU. For an Algerian shop selling phone cases, you will not see how much they spend or how many people they reached. So an ad cannot tell you if it sells. It only tells you that somebody is paying to show it.
A method that respects those limits (ours)
- Pick 3 search terms for the product: the French word, the Arabic word and the darija or brand-style word your customers use. Search each.
- Switch the country selector to the market you want and check whether the results change.
- Open the advertiser’s Page. Note the creation date and name history. A Page created last month with five products is not the same as an established shop.
- Look for repetition, with caution. Several advertisers selling the same item, or one Page running many variants of an ad, tells you the item is being tested. It does not prove profit.
- Note the start dates. Because inactive ads are not archived, save the link and a dated note for each ad you want to follow. An ad that started two months ago and is still active is a weak signal that someone keeps paying for it; it is not proof of margin.
- Open the landing page from the ad and note the offer: price, delivery fee, cash on delivery, guarantee, how fast they promise to ship.
- Do the maths yourself. Put your real cost, delivery, returns and confirmation rate in the COD profit calculator and read the real cost per delivered parcel. A product that looks hot can lose money after a high return rate: see how to cut COD returns.
- Test with a small budget before you buy stock. How to set it up is in the Meta ads guide; how to pay for the ads is in paying Meta and TikTok ads from Algeria.
A simple tracking table to copy into a spreadsheet:
| Date | Search term | Page name | Page created | Ad start date | Link saved | Offer seen (price, delivery) | My margin | Decision |
|---|
Using it to watch competitors
Search your own category with your competitors’ page names. Look at which creatives they run now, how many, and when they started. Do it every two weeks and note the changes. That tells you what they are testing, not what works.
What not to do
- Do not copy a competitor’s images, text or videos. Meta’s advertising standards include intellectual property rules, and a copied ad can be rejected or reported (the Library has its own report option for ads that you believe go against the standards). See why Meta rejects ads.
- Do not treat the Library as sales data. Everything that proves sales (spend, orders, returns) is hidden from you.
- Do not forget the rules. An online seller must follow law 18-05, including how the offer is presented.
Other Meta tools you may hear about
The Ad Library Report and the Ad Library API are described by Meta as tools for ads about social issues, elections or politics and for ads delivered to the EU. The Ad Targeting dataset is for approved researchers. They are not a way to get spend figures for a normal Algerian shop. Meta also says that you can download Library searches when you are logged in and have accepted the terms; we did not test what such an export contains for ordinary ads.
What we could not confirm
- Whether Algeria is in the country selector and how completely ads shown to Algerian users are listed: not tested by us while logged in.
- What a downloaded search contains for ordinary ads.
- Meta changes the Library layout often: if a button has moved, the help page linked below is the reference.

Show the point-by-point detail
- Verified The Ad Library contains all active ads shown across Meta technologies, plus active public branded content with a paid partnership label on Facebook and Instagram. Anyone can view and search it, by any term, name or Page.
- Verified For active ads that are not about social issues, elections or politics and do not deliver to the EU or associated territories, the Library shows the ad creative, the Page it ran from, and the dates it ran (per Meta, the start date), and Page Transparency details. It does not show amount spent, impression ranges, total reach, reach breakdowns, estimated audience size or targeting for these ads, and it does not archive them once inactive.
- Verified Page Transparency details include the Pages and connected accounts, the Page history, organisations that manage the Page, and primary countries where it is managed. When viewing a Page in the Library you can see when it was created and its name change history. Clicking See ad details gives more information, such as the About section or the lead form for a lead generation ad.
- Verified A country selector lets you view ads from a specific country. Age-restricted content (for example alcohol or gambling) is not shown to people who are underage or not logged into Facebook. You can report ads you think go against Meta Advertising Standards.
- Verified Beyond the search tool there are the Ad Library Report and the Ad Library API, which Meta describes as aimed at ads about social issues, elections or politics and ads delivered to the EU and associated territories; the Ad Targeting dataset is for approved researchers. Meta says searches can be downloaded when logged in and after agreeing to the terms.
- To verify Whether Algeria appears in the country selector and how fully ads shown to Algerian users are listed has not been tested by us in a logged-in session; what a downloaded search contains for ordinary ads is not confirmed. The Library layout changes often.
- Verified Meta Advertising Standards include an intellectual property policy; see our article on rejected ads for what we read.
