Check an Algerian NIF or NIS number: format, length, secondary establishment
Paste a tax identification number (NIF) or a statistical identification number (NIS): the tool strips spaces and dashes, counts the digits and tells you whether the format matches the published rules. It cannot tell whether the number exists or who it belongs to.

NIF and NIS: two numbers, two administrations
The NIF (tax identification number) is issued by the tax administration. Since the 2006 finance law it replaces the NIS as the identifier used to manage taxpayers. The NIS (statistical identification number) is issued by the National Statistics Office and listed in the national register of economic and social agents.
On an invoice, a contract or a bank file you are often asked for both, plus the trade register number. They are three distinct identifiers.
How a NIF and a NIS are built
According to the CNRC page on the NIF, it has fifteen positions as a rule, and twenty when it identifies a branch of a legal entity or an administrative entity: unit, secondary establishment, branch. The NIS has fifteen digits, and eighteen for a secondary establishment: the fifteen digits of the head office followed by a three-digit sequence number (executive decree 97-396, articles 4 and 5).
Our tool applies only these rules. It invents no check digit: we found none published.
A valid format is not an existing number
A number that passes has the right length and holds only digits. That proves neither that it was ever issued nor that it belongs to the business that gave it to you. Before paying a supplier or signing a contract, ask for the tax card or the registration certificate and keep a copy.
Frequently asked questions
How many digits does a NIF have in Algeria?
Fifteen as a rule, and twenty for a secondary establishment or a branch of a legal entity, according to the CNRC page on the NIF.
How many digits does a NIS have?
Fifteen digits, issued by the National Statistics Office. A secondary establishment gets the fifteen digits of the head office followed by a three-digit sequence number, eighteen in all (executive decree 97-396).
What is the difference between NIF and NIS?
The NIF comes from the tax administration and is used to manage taxpayers. The NIS comes from the National Statistics Office and identifies the business in the register of economic agents. The NIS is in the list of invoice mentions published by the Ministry of Commerce.
Does this tool confirm that a NIF exists?
No. It only checks the length and that the number is made of digits. No official database is queried.
Can a NIF or NIS contain letters?
The texts we read speak of positions for the NIF and digits for the NIS. Our tool expects digits: a number with letters is flagged as an unrecognised format, to check on the official document.
Are my numbers sent anywhere?
No. The check runs in your browser.
