How many wilayas does Algeria have in 2026?

Since law no. 26-06 published in Official Journal no. 25 of 5 April 2026, the new territorial division of the country has 69 wilayas and 1,541 communes. Eleven wilayas join the previous 58: Aflou, Barika, El Kantara, Bir El Ater, El Aricha, Ksar Chellala, Aïn Ouessara, Messaad, Ksar El Boukhari, Bou Saada and El Abiodh Sidi Cheikh.

Their codes run from 59 to 69 according to the joint ministerial order of 5 May 2026 that updates the directory of territorial authorities. Codes 01 to 58 remain the ones you know: 16 for Algiers, 31 for Oran, 25 for Constantine.

What is the wilaya code used for?

The two-digit code is used to fill in an administrative form, to read a vehicle registration or to sort a customer database by wilaya. Our list lets you find it from the name, in French or Arabic, and copy it in one click.

For developers and database managers, the CSV button exports the 69 wilayas with their codes and names in both languages, ready to feed a drop-down menu.

New wilayas: where do they come from?

Each new wilaya is split from an existing wilaya whose commune list was amended by the order of 5 May 2026. For example Barika comes from Batna and Bou Saada from M’Sila. The table shows the parent wilaya and the commune count when the order gives it. Full commune lists are not reproduced here.

Assumptions

  • Codes 01 to 58 follow the historic order of the wilayas; codes 59 to 69 come from the joint ministerial order of 5 May 2026 on the territorial directory (copy of the official text).
  • The commune count is shown only where that order gives it: the 11 new wilayas and the 10 wilayas whose commune list was amended.
  • The parent wilaya of a new wilaya is deduced from the wilayas whose commune lists the order amended.
  • Arabic names are our own wording: have a native speaker proofread them before any official use.

Cases not covered

  • The list of the 1,541 communes per wilaya is not included.
  • Dairas, delegated wilayas and postal codes are not included.
