Online store in Algeria: YouCan, Shopify, WooCommerce or a custom-built shop?

A decision guide: when a hosted platform is enough, when WooCommerce makes sense, and when paying a developer for a custom store is worth it, with the questions to ask before you choose.

“Should I open a YouCan store, use Shopify, install WooCommerce, or pay a developer?” The right answer depends less on the tool than on three things: how many orders you have, how specific your process is, and who will maintain the shop next year. This guide gives you a decision path. For the price details of each platform, read our dated comparison YouCan vs Shopify vs WooCommerce.

First, the rules that apply whatever you choose

Law 18-05 on e-commerce asks an online seller to be registered (commercial or craft register), to have a site hosted in Algeria with a .com.dz extension, and to show identifiers, contacts, prices including taxes and delivery terms in the offer. How the hosting rule applies to a store on a foreign platform is not settled by the texts we read. Go through the law 18-05 checklist for online sellers before you build anything.

Option 1: a hosted platform (YouCan, Shopify)

Good when you are testing products, sell mostly by cash on delivery, have fewer than a few hundred orders a month and no special process.

  • You start in days, without a developer.
  • Hosting, security updates and the checkout are the platform’s job.
  • Plans are priced in US dollars: YouCan from 29 a month and Shopify Basic at $29 a month on 29 October 2026. Paying them from Algeria raises the card question covered in paying for software in dinars or dollars.
  • Shopify Payments is not available for Algeria, so card payments need a third-party provider; COD works as a manual payment method.

Option 2: WooCommerce on your own hosting

Good when you want control over the site and its data, plan to host where you choose, and have someone (you or a freelancer) to maintain WordPress.

  • The core plugin is free, but hosting, extensions and maintenance are not. The vendor itself estimates hosting at $25 to $350 a month and extensions at $29 to $299 a year each.
  • You own the files and the database. You also own the updates, backups and security.

Option 3: a custom-built store

Good when your process does not fit a standard shop: your own confirmation flow, a link to your carrier’s system, B2B price lists, stock across several depots, or a marketplace with several sellers.

The decision path

  1. Fewer than about 10 orders a day (our rule of thumb) and a standard COD process? Start on a hosted platform. Spend your money on products and ads.
  2. You need your own hosting or Algerian hosting, and someone can maintain WordPress? WooCommerce.
  3. Your margin depends on a process no platform supports (custom confirmation, carrier integration, B2B)? Get quotes for a custom build, or for a WooCommerce site with custom extensions.
  4. Not sure? Run the numbers in the COD profit calculator first. If the shop is not profitable on a simple platform, custom code will not fix it.

If you hire a developer or a studio

Ask at least three providers for a written quote with the same brief. Options include a freelance WordPress developer, a local agency, or a studio. One example of a studio is NEKST DIGITAL, which lists an e-commerce development service covering storefront, checkout and payments, inventory and orders. Among its clients (SARL GMS, Mediterranean Float Glass, BEP Groupe, Dorwa Prod and Rawr Sneakers), its work page shows a WooCommerce sneaker store (rawrsneakers.com) with custom payment integrations, inventory tracking and custom layouts. The studio also builds Shopify stores. Whoever you choose, compare quotes line by line, not on the total.

What to have ready before any quote
